oral surgery and bone grafting in our dental center in North Bethesda

Bone that is not providing its normal function has a tendency to shrink, or resorb. For example, if you have been missing a tooth for some time, you are very likely to have experienced some bone loss in the area where the tooth once stood. Similarly, severe periodontal disease is often associated with resorption of the surrounding bone. Bone grafting, aims both to replace missing bone and to stimulate new bone growth. Bone grafting service available in our dental center in North Bethesda.

Bone grafting has become routine in oral and dental surgery in our North Bethesda office, and is used most frequently to prepare the jaw bone for dental implants. Dental implants sit on metal posts that are inserted directly into the bone of the jaw, and therefore, resorbed bone must be built up before implants can be placed.

Bone grafting can also be used for a number of other reasons, such as building up the alveolar bone to provide better support for dentures, or correcting bone defects caused by the removal of cysts, tooth extraction, or gum disease.

We now have the ability to grow bone where needed. This not only gives us the opportunity to place implants of proper length and width, it also gives us a chance to restore functional and aesthetic appearance.

What are the various options available for bone grafting?

Autograft - the patients' own bone, often harvested from the hip or local surgical site.

Allograft/DBM - donated cadaver bone tissue processed for human implantation.

BMPs - proteins that induce the formation of cartilage and bone

Synthetics - synthetic materials manufactured with chemistry similar to bone (CaP)

There are many ways in which bone grafting can be done. Whenever we can use the patients own bone for repairs or additions, we will get the best results.
