Dental Braces
Dental braces are used to straighten crooked teeth, align upper and lower jaws, improve the aesthetics of smiles and faces. Orthodontics refers to the use of devices to move teeth or underlying bone.
Braces consist of brackets that are bonded to the teeth, and arch wires that are threaded through the brackets. The arch wires act as a track and guide each tooth to its proper position. There are several types of orthodontic braces available to consumers, including the more traditional metal braces, ceramic braces, and clear plastic braces.
The length of time a person wears braces depends on age, the severity of the problem and the condition of the mouth. However, the average child wears braces for 18-30 months. After the braces are removed, a removable retainer must be worn for several months to hold the teeth in their proper position until they're more secure.
You probably will experience some discomfort or difficulty speaking or eating at first. While wearing braces, keep your teeth and brackets clean. If you wear cemented, non-removable braces, food and plaque can get trapped between teeth and gums. To reduce your risk of cavities, follow a regimen of brushing, flossing and rinsing, and reduce your consumption of sweets and carbohydrates. Plaque and sugar combine to make acid, which can cause white spots on teeth and tooth decay if left behind.
Clear Braces
Some dental offices offer clear braces. The brackets are made of pure monocrystalline sapphire, which makes the clear braces practically see-through - except for the arch wire. The closest thing to invisible braces currently available is the Invisalign teeth straightening system. The patented Invisalign® trays straighten teeth effectively, yet are virtually unnoticeable.
Metal Braces
Generally the most economical option, traditional metal braces may also be required for those needing extensive realignment. Your orthodontist will advise you whether metal orthodontic braces are necessary for your treatment.
